laura turner's story

AN UNEXPECTED TURNING POINT

For years, Laura struggled with anxiety, unresolved grief, depression, and identity confusion. Even after following recommended treatments, like therapy, medication, and doing everything “right” something still felt incomplete.

Then a traumatic brain injury changed everything. Sudden panic attacks, brain fog, and nervous system dysregulation disrupted her ability to work and move through life confidently. During one appointment, her neurologist made an unexpected recommendation: spend time with horses.

Skeptical but desperate for relief, Laura agreed.

THE FIRST HORSE

LAURA'S first encounter happened with a horse who was half-shaved due to metabolic issues and wearing a fly mask that covered his eyes. Laura remembers thinking: He gets me. A little exposed, but still mighty.

In that moment, she recognized something in herself, a vulnerability without weakness.

In the quiet presence of a horse, there was no pressure to be strong or certain. No expectation to explain. Instead, she could just breathe in the steadiness that very first horse provided. Thoughts she had buried for years surfaced and avoidance was no longer an option and no longer necessary.

GRIEF, GROWTH, AND RESPONSIBILITY

Through this work, Laura began processing the grief of losing her father—a lifelong special education teacher whose compassion for overlooked individuals deeply shaped her understanding of dignity and service.

She often reflects on how he believed every person deserved opportunity and respect. That belief now anchors her own.

At the same time, Laura faced a professional crossroads. Continuing in corporate work meant stability. Stepping toward the unknown meant alignment.

She chose alignment.

the birth of the healing herd

FROM PERSONAL HEALING TO PURPOSE

In 2023, Laura began envisioning what would become THE HEALING HERD—a nonprofit dedicated to equine-assisted learning and meaningful human connection.

When she temporarily lost access to the horses who had supported her recovery, the clarity became undeniable: this was no longer about her healing alone. It was a responsibility to create space for others to experience the same growth.

In April, that vision became tangible when she welcomed into her life Honey and Charlie—two horses experienced in equine-assisted work . Alongside her loyal dogs, Piper and Riley, together they became the foundation of The Healing Herd.

Laura established the organization and began formal training through PATH International’s Equine Assisted Learning Program, grounding lived experience in professional standards.

Today, THE HEALING HERD operates from the Wenatchee Valley with a growing vision to serve surrounding communities.

healing is not something we FORCE—it is something we allow. And sometimes, it arrives in unexpected form: steady, grounded, and willing to walk beside us. What began as personal recovery has become my life’s work, creating spaces where connection, responsibility, and growth happen one honest step
